The Eternity Ring
An eternity ring, also known as an infinity ring, is a lady’s ring normally worn on the third finger of her left hand, comprising of precious metal set with a continuous line of gemstones to symbolize never-ending love. In the past, it was believed that a vein “vena amoris”, Latin meaning for “the vein of love”, ran directly from this third finger to the heart. Unfortunately, this traditional belief is factually inaccurate, because all the fingers in the hand have a similar vein structure. The eternity ring can be worn on any finger, but commonly it is worn alongside an engagement and wedding ring, completing a trinity of rings on a woman’s wedding ring finger.
Usually, this type of ring is given from a husband to a wife on the occasion of a significant anniversary or to mark a special moment in a couple’s relationship. It also symbolizes the circle of life, and for this reason, is often given when a couple welcomes their first child into the world.
Although predominantly worn by women, in our more modern times, men sometimes choose an eternity ring as wedding band or engagement ring. Why let ladies have all the bling?!
Diamonds are the most popular choice of precious stone set in an eternity ring, and they look great alongside an engagement ring set in either coloured gemstones or diamonds. Another option is to have an eternity ring set in sapphire, ruby or emerald stones, usually in conjunction with diamonds.
Eternity rings can be set with stones in a continuous circle – known as a full eternity ring, or set with a continuous line on the face of the ring only – known as a half eternity ring. They can be set in a claw/prong setting or a flush setting. Full eternity rings usually cost 2-3 times the price of a smaller half eternity due to having more stones set in them.
The full eternity ring cannot usually be adjusted for a finger size, but the half eternity ring can be fairly easily resized. This makes the half eternity ring more economical for retail jewellers and an easier option for someone purchasing without knowing a correct ring size.
Some consideration needs are given if the eternity ring is going to sit alongside other rings. Look for a design where the stones will match, ensure there is not too big a gap between the rings and that stones will not knock together as they could eventually fall out.
